Washington Workplace Client, Arlington Free Clinic, Receives LEED Gold Certification

As reported in the Sun Gazette, September 16, 2010

Arlington Free Clinic leaders, staff and volunteers joined county government officials this week in celebrating the designation of the clinic's new space as LEED Gold by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design initiative of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Arlington Free Clinic becomes the first clinic of its type nationally to earn LEED Gold status. The design team of Perkins+Will, Bognet Construction, Integral Engineering and Washington Workplace was honored for its efforts on the facility.

By working closely with design and engineering teams that donated significant amounts of time and labor, AFC was able to achieve a nationally recognized "green" space that is healthy, comfortable and cost-effective, clinic officials said.

They called the initiative an example of integrating AFC's values of excellence in medical care and organizational management with Arlington's commitment to sustainable design and construction.

Augmenting the clinic with environmentally friendly amenities was done with an eye to the bottom line: Green features were incorporated into the design only if they cost no more than 5 percent more than the cost of traditional design elements, Free Clinic executive director Nancy Pallesen said when the facility debuted.

The 8,100-square-foot clinic opened last year just off Columbia Pike, part of the Halstead mixed-use complex. During construction of the complex, the clinic spent four years located in North Arlington, having earlier provided its services from Columbia Pike.

During the construction process, Free Clinic officials had hoped to attain at least LEED Silver certification. The gold level is one step higher.
